BC FFNPT working group

We are a coalition of concerned citizens from all over BC (from Victoria to Kelowna and a lot of places in between!) who are trying to get information out about this Treaty so that more citizens can bring it to their local councils and elected officials at all levels.   We know that Canada needs to be a leader in creating a safer, more stable future for all of us to enjoy.

Recent campaigns & successes

BC now has 11 local municipalities that have endorsed a call for the Fossil Fuel Non Proliferation Treaty.   Victoria was the 50th globally and it is growing quickly, with Powell River being the latest.

We are continuing on with other Safe Cities campaigns, like trying to ban gas hookups in new buildings.  Head here for more info

What is the
Fossil Fuel Non Proliferation Treaty?

The Fossil Fuel Non Proliferation Treaty originated in Vancouver (with Tzeporah Berman ) but is now a world wide movement.

Its purpose is calling on all governments, organizations and individuals to work together to find a fair, just way to shift our global systems away from producing and using fossil fuels.

BUT WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT

Despite politicians now claiming they are taking the climate crises seriously, there is a gaping hole in their plans.  NO WHERE (not in the Kyoto or Paris Agreements or any other report) have they even mentioned the most significant cause of the problem: continued fossil fuel production.

Every agreement looks at limiting GHG emissions but it never requires a reduction in the actual source of those emissions.  Canada and other major oil producing countries are planning to keep INCREASING production, even though it's been shown we are already on track to produce enough fossil fuels to use up double our carbon budget

YES that's right - we are already over budget and that doesn't include projects that are STILL BEING APPROVED.   Crazy as it seems, our governments are all refusing to deal with the cumulative damage caused by their individual choices.

We have to get governments to agree to stop this deadly proliferation of fossil fuels.  We are out of time for any other options.

It will take all of us working together to solve this problem, but we know that we can and will implement the solutions to make a healthier, safer world for everyone.

The treaty has 3 Pillars:

NON-PROLIFERATION

Prevent the proliferation of coal, oil and gas by ending all new exploration and production

FAIR PHASE-OUT

Phase-out existing production of fossil fuels in line with the 1.5C global climate goal

JUST TRANSITION

Fast-track real solutions and a just transition for every worker, community and country

Why bring this treaty to BC?

BC and Canada have repeatedly made commitments to LOWER EMISSIONS but have not done so.

The fossil fuel industry has made sure that, despite efforts like the Carbon Tax, they have remained protected from any attempts to cut back on the damage they do. Instead, they are being encouraged to expand, and are increasingly supported by our tax dollars: dollars that should be funding transitions to renewable energy and new jobs for workers and communities.

We know BC and Canada can do better

STANDING UP TO THE VERY POWERFUL FOSSIL FUEL INDUSTRY IS GOING TO BE A TOUGH JOB - WE KNOW THEY HAVE SUCCESSFULLY LOBBIED OUR GOVERNMENTS AND CONTROLLED DECISIONS FROM THE BACKROOMS FOR A LONG TIME.  WITHOUT TACKLING THIS ISSUE HEAD ON, WE CANNOT POSSIBLY HOPE TO HAVE THE SAFE TRANSITION TO RENEWABLE ENERGY THAT CANADIANS ALL NEED AND WANT!

IF WE ARE GOING TO BE SUCCESSFUL AT "KEEPING THE OIL IN THE SOIL" NOT JUST HERE BUT AROUND THE WORLD, WE NEED THE FOSSIL FUEL NON PROLIFERATION TREATY

Why a TREATY?

Just as fifty years ago the world needed a treaty to defuse the threats posed by weapons of mass destruction, the world today needs a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty to allow governments to work together globally against the Climate Crises
